Hints
Paint finishes vary depending on the room and your desired atmosphere and effect. Usually an eggshell finish is recommended for the base color, particularly when using darker colors.
For a rich, contrasting effect, a pearl or semi-gloss finish can be applied on top of the eggshell finish using the overlay technique. For a more subtle finish, the application of a second eggshell finish using the same technique will result in an elegant finish.
Color suggestions
Color selection is an essential step in creating a beautiful look.
To pull together and enhance your entire look , choose a favorite color from your furniture, carpet or accessories. To obtain a natural finish, such as marble-like finish, be sure to use colors that are found in nature, for a more realistic effect. Helpful Hints
- Carefully mask the areas that you do not want glazed, such as ceiling and woodwork.
- Use easy-to-remove painters tape and carefully remove it as soon as your work is finished
- The width of the stripes dictates the perspective you will give to your room. For example, in a small room we recommend narrow vertical stripes to make it look larger. Horizontal stripes produce a deeper effect but give the illusion of a lower ceiling. As always, you can vary the width of your stripes to create your own personal and unique effect.
- If you need to do some touching up, you should wait until the glaze is completely dry or you may worsen the problem. To soften areas that are too dark, add some of the paint you used for the base color and rework the texture if necessary.
- Remember that the last color applied will be the predominant color. Also, because opacity is reduced when paint is blended with glaze, you may want to select a tone that is darker than your initial choice in order to compensate for the dilution of color.
- If using the color overlay techniques (with base color remaining visible through the overlay color), complementary colors (i.e. green/red, yellow/ purple, orange/blue) are generally inappropriate, as the transparency will cause them to blend, resulting in a muddied brown. Generally, we recommend choosing colors in the same or similar color families to produce a successful finish.
- Remember that you will more easily master the final effect of the finish if you overlay thin coats, rather than applying a single dark coat.
- Beginning at the ceiling, apply your glaze downward to avoid running or dripping.
-
Be sure to try out your faux-finish technique on a practice board first. This will help you get comfortable with the technique you choose and find the colors and pattern you want. If working on large surfaces, such as walls, use large practice boards for best results.
