THE SENSUAL HOME: A REMODELING TALE IN THREE PARTS

Part three: the bedroom

After having looked at the living room and the kitchen/dining area, we can now turn our attention to the third step in the renovation taking place in a client’s home under designer Monica Bussoli. Starting out with two chairs, a practically empty space and a budget eaten into by the earlier remodeling, Monica has designed an elegant room with a wonderfully restive atmosphere. Bedrooms are our most private spaces and should act as sanctuaries, providing us with a spot where we can isolate ourselves from the pressure and stress of daily life. Such a haven of peace will allow us to recharge our batteries by promoting deep, healing sleep.

We have prepared a list of useful tips for creating just such a calm and invigorating atmosphere.

1. Locate the bedroom in a place where you are going to feel safe and secure. For example, a room located on the upper floor provides an immediate feeling of protection.

2. Make sure you can adjust the lighting: subdued at night yet catching plenty of light in the morning. This will allow you to live more in harmony with the natural cycle of day and night.

3. Avoid accumulating objects everywhere and allow sufficient space to move around the bed with ease.

4. Choose furniture and decorative elements conducive to rest, such as a wooden or fabric-covered headboard and a comfortable armchair for reading. If the dimensions of your bedroom allow it, install nightstands that are solid and large enough for you to rest a book on, as well as a vase of fresh flowers.

5. Go for natural fibers in your sheets – cotton or flax – something that will keep you warm while allowing your skin to breathe.

6. Choose a color scheme that evokes the dominant quality you wish your bedroom to have. For example, choose blue to soothe both body and spirit, green for harmony and balance, natural tones for calmness and serenity and white to emphasize space and luminosity.

And now, good night!
